Hero of the month – Carly Rowena
Today I met: Carly Rowena, Health and Fitness blogger, personal trainer and rising YouTube star. Her dynamic workouts and healthy recipe videos are continuing to grow in popularity and gain subscribers and it’s obvious why; she is completely passionate about fitness, she is motivational, she loves her food, and her washboard abs are something to be admired and desired. In-between sipping fresh smoothies in a juice bar in bustling Camden, we chatted about Carly’s life, her routines, what makes her tick, the inspirations in her life and her exciting future ambitions.
What is your background?
I previously worked in Marketing for BMW & MINI and decided to create YouTube videos to find my passion, after 4 months my followers made me aware that fitness was my talent so I quit my job, trained in Fitness and am now a fully qualified personal trainer and YouTuber.
And if you had to choose your favourite exercise…?
I love working with weights, so anything where I can lift heavy and push my limits is my favourite, right now I’m loving Kettlebells.
Describe what your usual day looks like?
I wake up around 5:30 for my first client and train myself around 10am, followed by a refuel before my other clients arrive. I always have a break at lunch to clear my head and walk my french bulldog, reply to social media comments and blog before heading back to the gym for my evening clients. Dinner is usually around 8pm, followed by a walk with my boyfriend and puppy to put the world to rights, offload and spend sometime away from technology.
How about your diet, what do you love to eat?
I love food and my eyes have always been bigger than my belly, which is why I train. Luckily i have always enjoyed healthy food but I certainly have a sweet tooth. Breakfast is normally scrambled egg and vegetables or porridge, lunch is salmon with leafy greens and dinner is vegetarian chilli with rice, followed by a hot chocolate or couple of squares of Lindt chocolate.
What’s your biggest guilty pleasure?
It has to be apple pie or cheesecake, I can never say no!
What do you enjoy reading? Do you have a favourite book?
I’m always trying to learn something new so generally turn to Podcasts to up my brain, at the moment I’m loving The Power Of Purpose.
Do you have a favourite movie?
Such a hard question as it totally depends on my mood. I have to say that I really loved Guardians Of The Galaxy, such an epic soundtrack!
Who or what inspires you most?
My followers, their dedication to work hard through personal struggle is incredibly inspiring, if they can do it – so can I.
Do you have a motto that you live by?
‘Let’s just be who we really are.’
And what does the future hold for you?
I have so many hopes and dreams for the future and the best part of my job is that I never know what’s around the corner, there are so many different directions to go, all I can say is that I want to travel the world helping others to feel incredible in their wardrobe.
Any top tips for us on staying healthy?
Take each day as it comes. Too often people try to change everything in one go, small changes will make big differences and give you longer to go before you plateau, concentrate on what you have done today, it will stop you from binging, feeling overwhelmed and missing key points.
Where’s your favourite spot in London?
It has to be Shoreditch, I’m actually from Norwich so haven’t been able to explore London too often, however my meetings always seem to be in Shoreditch and I adore the vibe.
What would you say is the best advice ever given to you?
You are not meant to be perfect.
Do you have a personal hero?
Without sounding too soppy, it would have to be my partner, we’re both in the same industry and he continues to amaze me every day, he pushes boundaries, is constantly teaching himself new skills and never loses his motivation.
Lastly, if you could choose a superpower, what would you pick?
To fly, in my dreams it’s always the most incredible feeling.
